CHIE FUEKI and TOM ANDERSEN
September 13 - October 11, 2003
For her second one-person exhibition at the gallery, Chie Fueki will present Fire, Flower, Night, a selection of new medium- and large-scale paintings on mulberry paper, mounted on wood panel. Diverging from her earlier imagery, which was mostly based upon landscape, Ms. FuekiÕs newest works, which include images of birds and insects as well as skulls and mountains (as before) are more frontally directed, with the imagery lingering more closely at the surface, and often with combinations of symbols reading like a rebus. The results are pronouncedly more graphic and dense; the entirety accentuated by an increased application of fluorescent and metallic pigments.
ÒFueki was born in Japan and raised in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and she utilizes both countriesÕ characteristic modes of narration in her work. Joining the visual vocabulary of Japanese decorative arts and the romantic logic of Latin American Ômagical realists,Õ she creates images that evoke such universal themes as the cycle of life, day and night, and the senses and seasons. Made with shimmering paint and multiple layers of color and patters, the paintings reflect death and decay in a beautiful show of glitter and fireworks.Ó (Altfest)
In the front gallery, Tom Andersen
will be presenting a large selection of small acrylic airbrush paintings on
panel and glass. Incorporating a broad spectrum of imagery, from the
naturalistic to the dreamily fantasticalÑoften segueing into pure
cartoonÑAndersenÕs idiosyncratic style paired with his ample imagination, and
accompanied by exceptional technique, combine to create a miniature world as
beguiling as it is bountiful.
